How to find your age from your birth year

  1. Enter the birth year in the field above (four digits, for example 1990).
  2. Press “Run” or the Enter key.
  3. See the age you turn this year and how old you are right now.

Why a birth year gives your age to within a year

With only the birth year, the exact age in days can't be known: it depends on whether the birthday has already happened this year. So the answer is two neighbouring values.

The rule is simple: subtract the birth year from the current year. That is the age you reach this year. If your birthday has already passed, that's your current age; if it's still ahead, you're one year younger right now.

To know your age to the day, you need the full date of birth. Use the main age calculator by date — it works out years, months and days precisely.

When counting age by year is handy

When the full date isn't needed: a quick estimate from a graduation year, a release year or the year of an important event.

When you only know someone's birth year and want a rough idea of their current age.

When filling in a form or table where the age by year is enough, rather than an exact date.

Age by birth year FAQ

How do I work out my age if I only know my birth year?

Subtract your birth year from the current year. The result is the age you turn this year. If your birthday has already passed, that's your age now; if not, you're one year younger.

Why are there two possible ages for a birth year?

Without the exact day and month, it's impossible to tell whether the birthday has happened yet this year. So two neighbouring values are possible: your current age and the age you turn this year.

How old is someone born in 2000?

The age this year equals the current year minus 2000. If their birthday in 2000 has already passed this calendar year, that's their age; otherwise it's one year less.

How do I get my exact age from my full date of birth?

Use the main age calculator by date: it counts full years, months and days, including leap years, for a result that's exact to the day.

Can I find a birth year from an age?

Yes, in reverse: subtract the age from the current year. That gives the birth year for people whose birthday has already passed this year; for the rest it's one less.

Does the calculator use the current year automatically?

Yes. The current year is taken from today's date in your device's local time — there's nothing else to enter.

Is it free?

Yes, the calculator is completely free and works without any sign-up or limits.

Is the birth year I enter stored?

No. The calculation runs directly in your browser on your device — the year you enter is never sent anywhere or saved.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes, the page works the same on phones, tablets and computers.
